During the last week you would have been able to read everywhere on the road that the Sydney Harbour Bridge will be closed on Sunday 18/03/2007 from 4:30am to 11pm. It is the most famous brigde in Australia. It is located opposite the Sydnay Opera House and close to Circular Quay. You certainly can find the Sydney Harbour Bride on postcards, souvenirs and any tourist guides. The Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House are iconic images of both Sydney and Australia.
You can ask why it was closed for so long time? Even during New Year celebration the Sydney Harbour Bridge is closed for shorter time.
What is the event why the great icons of the world is closed for the whole day? It is because this huge monster has 75th birthday.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened on 19 March 1932 after 8 years of construction which was started in 1924. Six million hand driven rivets and 53,000 tonnes of steel were used in its construction. Today about 160,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day. The bridge has 8 lines but it does not solve the traffic problems.
I have to cross Sydney Harbour bridge twice a day during business days and sometimes it takes a long time to stay in traffic before you will come to it.
Since 1998 BridgeClimb made it possible for tourists and locals to climb the monument. After climbing through catwalks and up ladders and stairs, the view is absolutely breathtaking.
Today Thousands of people came into Sydney's central business district to walk across the brigde.
Happy Birthday Sydney Harbour Bridge!
